Rivian’s CFO is leaving the company

Rivian Loses Its CFO at a Critical Juncture

Claire McDonough, Rivian’s chief financial officer, is resigning at the end of October, marking a significant leadership transition for the electric vehicle maker.

The company announced McDonough’s departure in a regulatory filing Thursday, stating she is stepping down to “pursue a new opportunity and relocate to the East Coast to be closer to her family.” McDonough has already been hired as CFO at Massachusetts based GE Vernova, according to the energy equipment manufacturer and her LinkedIn post.

Rivian emphasized that her resignation is “not the result of any disagreement.” The company has begun searching for a permanent replacement, with vice president of finance Derek Mulvey set to serve as interim CFO once McDonough leaves her post.

A Pivotal Moment for Rivian

McDonough’s departure comes at a critical time for Rivian as the company tackles some of its biggest projects to date. The EV maker is currently scaling up production and sales of its R2 SUV, which started shipping to customers this summer.

She was hired to the CFO spot in January 2021, replacing Ryan Green, at a tumultuous period for the company. Rivian was still private then but had raised billions of dollars in its bid to bring three compelling electric vehicles to market: its flagship R1T truck, the R1S SUV, and a commercial delivery van.

The company was plagued with delays and added costs, compounded by supply chain constraints, and was burning through significant capital. In her first year, Rivian started production of the R1T and raised $12 billion in one of the biggest IPOs of the year. The stock debuted at $78 but has since fallen to $16.80 as of Thursday’s closing.

Key Contributions and Legacy

While McDonough lacked direct automotive experience, having previously worked at JP Morgan and Fairway Market, she was known for working closely with design and engineering teams and founder CEO RJ Scaringe. Her focus was on ensuring future vehicles were modern and compelling without losing money on every sale, according to insiders.

Beyond financial oversight, McDonough led corporate and business development, vehicle maintenance and repairs, facilities, and Rivian’s charging network. She played a vital role in a technology joint venture with Volkswagen Group. That deal, finalized in November 2024, has VW investing up to $5.8 billion into Rivian by 2027 in exchange for access to its electrical architecture and software expertise.

In her LinkedIn post, McDonough reflected on her tenure: “Together, we launched the R1T, R1S, and our commercial van, drove technology innovation and partnerships, built our go-to-market operations, and positioned the company for global scale and profitability with the launch of R2. Being part of taking Rivian from an ambitious vision to a category defining enterprise has been the highlight of my career.”

What This Means for Rivian

The CFO departure adds another layer of uncertainty for Rivian as it navigates the challenging transition from ambitious startup to established automaker. The company is at a critical phase, needing to scale production efficiently while managing costs and maintaining investor confidence.

Finding a replacement who can step into McDonough’s role seamlessly will be crucial. The new CFO will need to continue the financial discipline McDonough established while supporting the company’s ambitious growth plans, particularly the R2 launch and the VW partnership.

For now, Rivian’s leadership team must ensure continuity through the transition while demonstrating to investors that the company remains on track despite this key executive departure.
