AI’s Memory Crunch Is Coming for Android Apps
Google is tightening requirements for Android apps as the AI data center boom creates industrywide memory chip shortages that are beginning to affect mobile devices.
The company announced two new app quality requirements this week, with a primary focus on reducing apps’ memory usage and optimizing code. According to Google, the mobile industry is now facing “significant hardware supply constraints that are altering device memory availability,” which can directly impact the consumer experience with their devices.
New Performance Thresholds
To address these challenges, Google is establishing new performance standards across several areas, including dynamic memory usage and bitmap usage. The company is also adding code optimization requirements designed to prevent app slowdowns and crashes related to performance issues.
The changes are particularly significant for low-end devices where price points are a concern and memory may be less available. Google’s goal is to help Android app and game makers continue delivering a quality experience despite the changing hardware landscape.
Tools to Help Developers
To support developers in meeting these new requirements, Google is rolling out tools that will alert them when their apps exceed the new thresholds. These notifications will enable developers to take action by optimizing their code. More diagnostic tools are planned for later in the year, including deeper insights provided by a Memory Limiter feature that prevents apps from using too much device memory.
Developers have until February 2027 to meet the new thresholds, which are documented on Google’s Android Developer site. This timeline gives app makers a reasonable window to adapt their code and optimize performance.
Additional Requirement: Zero Tap Sign-In
Beyond the memory focused changes, Google will require all Play Store apps to meet the Zero Tap Sign-In requirement during device migrations by April 2027. This standard requires that apps with user sign-ins, whether optional or mandatory, automatically restore the user’s sign-in state when they move between Android devices using the Android Restore Credentials API.
