Anthropic’s $45 Billion Compute Spree: The New Arms Race in AI Infrastructure

Anthropic has signed a staggering $45 billion deal with Nscale for AI compute, continuing its aggressive expansion to keep pace with rivals like OpenAI.

The British AI infrastructure company Nscale, founded just in 2024, will supply Anthropic with computing power via Nvidia’s state-of-the-art Vera Rubin chip system. This cutting edge technology combines six different chips working in concert and is considered the current pinnacle of chip design. The compute capacity is expected to begin powering Anthropic’s services in late 2027, according to a source familiar with the deal.

The six year agreement, first reported by Bloomberg, will draw computing power from Nscale’s flagship data center in West Virginia. This latest partnership is just one piece of Anthropic’s broader strategy to aggressively scale up compute capacity in an effort to better compete with OpenAI and other major players.

A Pattern of Massive Investments

Over the past eight months, Anthropic has been on a remarkable spending spree, securing compute deals that rival the GDP of small nations.

Earlier this month, the company signed a $10 billion deal with AI cloud startup Volta, securing a six year supply of cloud computing power from a data center in Norway. In July, Anthropic added a $5 billion compute related deal with AMD to its portfolio.

Perhaps most notably, in May, Anthropic revealed a large computing deal with SpaceX, which is run by Elon Musk. Musk’s rivalry with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has made him an unlikely ally of Anthropic. That deal draws computing capacity from two different SpaceX data centers and is reportedly providing Anthropic with a massive $1.25 billion worth of capacity each month.

The company has also expanded its partnerships with existing cloud providers. In April, Anthropic signed a deal to significantly expand its partnership with Amazon, gaining access to an additional 5 gigawatts of compute. That same month, the company also expanded its relationship with Google and Broadcom, adding even more power capacity.

The Industry Wide Compute Race

Anthropic is hardly alone in its enthusiastic pursuit of more AI horsepower. The race to gobble up as much compute capacity as possible is ongoing, with other major players including Google, OpenAI, and Meta all following a similar track.

This compute arms race reflects a fundamental reality of the AI industry: cutting edge models require massive, expensive infrastructure. Access to high performance chips and data centers has become a key competitive advantage, and companies are willing to spend tens of billions of dollars to secure their position.

These enormous investments signal that the AI industry is entering a new phase where infrastructure scale may become as important as algorithmic innovation. Companies that can secure reliable, high performance compute capacity at scale will have a significant advantage in training larger and more capable models.
