7 Easy Ways to Speed Up Windows 11 and Make Your PC Feel New Again

Is your Windows 11 PC feeling sluggish? Before you drop cash on new hardware, try these seven simple tweaks. They take only a few minutes to apply, require no extra software, and can deliver a noticeable speed boost on almost any machine. Whether you’re running a brand-new laptop or a five-year-old desktop, these practical steps will help Windows 11 feel responsive again.

1. Trim Your Startup Programs

Every app that launches at boot steals memory and CPU cycles. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, click the Startup apps tab, and disable anything you don’t need the moment your PC turns on. Chat apps, updaters, and vendor utilities are prime candidates. Leave your antivirus and essential system tools alone.

2. Turn Off Unnecessary Visual Effects

Animations, shadows, and transparency look nice but tax your GPU and CPU, especially on older hardware. Open the Start menu, type “Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows”, and pick Adjust for best performance. If you still want a polished look, choose Custom and keep only Smooth edges of screen fonts and Show thumbnails instead of icons.

3. Switch to Best Performance Power Mode

Windows 11 ships with a balanced power plan that prioritizes battery life over raw speed. Go to Settings > System > Power & battery, then set Power mode to Best performance. Desktop users will see the biggest difference; laptop users should only use this mode while plugged in.

4. Free Up Disk Space With Storage Sense

A nearly full drive slows everything down. Head to Settings > System > Storage and toggle Storage Sense on. It automatically clears temporary files, empties your Recycle Bin on a schedule, and removes old downloads. For a one-time deep clean, click Temporary files and delete what you no longer need.

5. Uninstall Apps You Don’t Use

Bloatware and forgotten software clog storage and often run hidden background services. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, sort by size, and uninstall anything you haven’t opened in months. Be cautious with system-branded entries from your PC maker, but third-party trials and games are usually safe to remove.

6. Enable Efficiency Mode for Heavy Processes

Efficiency Mode throttles background apps so the programs you’re actively using get more resources. In Task Manager, right-click any background process and choose Efficiency mode. It’s perfect for always-on utilities like cloud sync clients and browsers with dozens of tabs.

7. Keep Windows and Drivers Updated

Performance patches and driver updates ship regularly. Open Settings > Windows Update, click Check for updates, and install anything pending. Then visit Device Manager to update your graphics and chipset drivers — outdated drivers are a sneaky cause of stutter and lag.

Bonus Tip: Restart Weekly

Most of us just close the laptop lid, but a full restart clears memory leaks, applies pending updates, and resets background processes. Make it a weekly habit — you’ll feel the difference.

Final Thoughts

You don’t need a new PC to enjoy a faster Windows 11 experience. Work through these seven tweaks in about 30 minutes and you should see quicker boot times, snappier app launches, and smoother multitasking. Bookmark this guide and revisit it every few months — a little maintenance goes a long way.
