OpenAI loses a top data center exec, as stream of high-profile departures continues

OpenAI’s Executive Exodus Continues: Top Data Center Chief Departs Amidst Major Reorganization

The revolving door at OpenAI’s upper echelons shows no signs of slowing. The company has lost yet another high-ranking executive, with Chris Malone, its head of data centers, departing last week after just over a year on the job. The news, first reported by the Wall Street Journal, adds to a growing list of more than a dozen senior leaders who have exited in 2026, raising fresh questions about the AI giant’s internal stability.

A Key Departure at a Critical Time

Malone’s departure is particularly notable given his role. He joined OpenAI in March 2025, not long after the launch of the high-profile Stargate Project a $500 billion data center initiative backed by the Trump administration. As a key partner in that effort alongside Oracle, Nvidia, SoftBank, and Microsoft, OpenAI’s data center strategy is central to its ambitious growth plans and its ability to compete in the AI infrastructure race.

Before his brief stint at OpenAI, Malone amassed significant experience, spending nearly five years at Meta and over a decade at Google. His expertise would seem critical at a time when data center strategy has become one of the most closely watched roles in the industry.

Reorganization and Shifting Reporting Lines

In a statement to TechCrunch, OpenAI attributed Malone’s departure to a recent reorganization of its infrastructure organization, which was “to support the scale and pace of our work.” As part of this restructuring, Malone stopped reporting directly to OpenAI President Greg Brockman and began reporting to Vice President Sachin Katti, who took over leadership of the group.

OpenAI maintains it has a “strong, deeply experienced data center team in place” to execute its plans, with leaders including Uday Ruddarraju, Brent Mayo, and Spas Lazarov now overseeing different aspects of the data center strategy.

A Year of High-Profile Exits

Malone is just the latest name on a long list of senior departures. Business Insider recently tallied the total at 13 executive exits in 2026, with several occurring in just the last month. Some of the most notable departures include:

  • Brad Lightcap: One of OpenAI’s longest-serving executives, who left his role as Chief Operating Officer to “start something new.”
  • Denise Dresser: Replaced as Chief Revenue Officer after only eight months with the company.
  • Fidji Simo: The de facto second-in-command (Product and Business Chief) who stepped down to recover from a chronic illness, though she remains as an advisor.
  • Chloé Bakalar: Head of Ethics, who departed in July.
  • Bill Peebles: Former head of the now-defunct Sora AI image generator team.

The company also recently disbanded its preparedness team, which was dedicated to assessing catastrophic risks from its AI models.

Leadership Downplays the Churn

OpenAI’s remaining leadership has tried to minimize the significance of these departures. Co-founder Greg Brockman recently lamented that the intense “spotlight” on the company means that “every departure gets scrutinized in a way that it doesn’t otherwise.”

However, the timing is particularly sensitive. OpenAI is reportedly preparing for an initial public offering (IPO), now expected in 2027, and is undergoing the kind of reputational vetting that comes with a looming listing. The executive churn has fueled concerns about the company’s valuation and whether its profitability can match the gargantuan investments being made in the lab. In this context, the steady stream of outgoing executives has done little to quiet those doubts, casting a shadow over OpenAI’s otherwise dominant position in the AI industry.
