Meta Launches Muse Wonder, Its First Frontier AI Models to Challenge OpenAI and Anthropic

Meta is making a stronger push into the artificial intelligence industry with the launch of Muse Wonder and Muse Wonder Full, two advanced AI models designed to handle complex tasks across professional and personal workflows. Announced on October 12, 2026, the new models represent a significant milestone in the company’s efforts to compete with leading AI developers, including OpenAI and Anthropic.

Developed by Meta’s Superintelligence Lab, the Muse Wonder series builds on the company’s earlier Muse Spark model, moving beyond lightweight AI capabilities toward more advanced reasoning, coding, memory, and autonomous task execution.

The launch also signals Meta’s growing ambition to develop AI systems that can do more than answer questions. The company wants its models to help users complete complicated tasks, manage information over time, and work toward goals with less continuous human guidance.

Meta Introduces Two Powerful AI Models

The new release consists of Muse Wonder and Muse Wonder Full, two models designed for different levels of capability and access.

Muse Wonder is the more accessible model, built to support developers and users who need advanced AI performance for everyday and professional applications. Muse Wonder Full is a larger, more capable version intended for demanding tasks that require more extensive reasoning and sustained problem-solving.

According to Meta, its internal evaluations show that the models deliver competitive performance against leading AI systems, including OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra and Anthropic’s Fable 5.1. These comparisons are based on benchmarks reported by Meta, and independent testing will be important for determining how the models perform in real-world applications.

The launch follows a broader restructuring of Meta’s AI operations as the company seeks to strengthen its position in the increasingly competitive market for advanced AI models.

Active Memory Could Make Meta’s AI More Personal

One of the most important features of the Muse Wonder series is a capability Meta calls Active Memory.

The technology is designed to help the models retain useful information across conversations and recall relevant details when users return to a task later. Instead of treating every interaction as an isolated exchange, the system aims to maintain continuity across days, weeks, and potentially longer periods.

This could make AI assistants more useful for people managing ongoing projects, business operations, research, and personal responsibilities.

For example, an AI assistant with effective memory could remember a user’s project requirements, refer back to earlier decisions, and use that context to help complete subsequent tasks. It could also reduce the need for users to repeatedly explain their preferences or provide the same background information.

Meta has highlighted memory performance as a major strength of Muse Wonder, reporting that the model outperformed several competing systems on its MemoryBench evaluation.

However, the practical value of this feature will depend on how reliably the system remembers relevant details, handles outdated information, and protects sensitive personal data.

Active Focus Helps AI Agents Work Through Complex Tasks

Alongside Active Memory, Meta is introducing another capability called Active Focus.

This feature is designed to help the models continue working toward a goal when a task becomes difficult. The system can explore alternative approaches, recover from errors, and continue working through a problem rather than stopping after an unsuccessful attempt.

Such capabilities are particularly important for AI agents, which are designed to perform multiple connected actions instead of simply generating a single response.

Consider a user who wants assistance understanding an insurance claim, reviewing a lease agreement, or building a software application. These activities can involve several stages, including gathering information, interpreting documents, identifying problems, and preparing a final result.

Meta says Muse Wonder is designed to handle this type of multi-step work across areas such as law, finance, healthcare information, and software development.

The models may also ask for clarification when necessary and check with users before carrying out important actions. These safeguards could help make AI agents more dependable when working on tasks that involve sensitive information or consequential decisions.

Meta Targets Professional Work and Software Development

The Muse Wonder launch reflects a broader shift in the AI industry toward tools that can assist with practical work rather than focusing exclusively on conversation.

In professional environments, AI systems are increasingly being developed to interpret documents, analyze information, automate repetitive processes, and support decision-making.

Meta says its new models are designed to help users understand legal documents, make sense of financial information, interpret health-related material, and complete complicated coding projects.

For developers, the models are intended to support everything from building small applications to working on larger software projects. Their ability to maintain context and recover from mistakes could be particularly useful for coding tasks that require sustained attention across multiple stages.

Nevertheless, professional users will still need to verify AI-generated outputs, especially in areas such as law, finance, and healthcare where errors can have significant consequences.

Pricing and Availability

Meta has begun making the new models available through its developer and coding platforms.

Muse Wonder is available through the Meta Model API and Muse Code, while Muse Wonder Full is currently available to Muse Code subscribers and is not being offered through the API.

According to the reported pricing, Muse Wonder costs $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output tokens through the Meta Model API.

Muse Wonder Full’s restricted availability creates a distinction between the standard model, which developers can access through the API, and the more capable version reserved for eligible subscribers.

Meta also plans to integrate Muse Wonder into its Muse AI assistant, initially rolling it out to subscribers. The integration could bring the models’ improved memory and task-completion capabilities to a broader consumer audience over time.

Safety and Privacy Remain Important Challenges

As AI agents become capable of accessing messages, calendars, documents, and other personal information, privacy and safety become increasingly important.

Meta says it trained the Muse Wonder models to avoid sharing private information without permission, refuse requests that facilitate harmful activities, and strengthen defenses against cybersecurity threats.

The company has also said that its models are designed to support defensive cybersecurity work while maintaining safeguards against misuse.

These protections will be important as AI systems gain greater autonomy. A model that can manage information and carry out actions on a user’s behalf must be able to distinguish between legitimate instructions and requests that could expose private data or cause harm.

Meta says the models were developed under its Superintelligence Scaling Framework, which establishes standards for evaluating and releasing increasingly capable AI systems. The company has indicated that additional safety evaluation results will be made available.

Independent assessments and real-world use will help determine how effectively these protections work in practice.

Meta’s Growing Competition With OpenAI and Anthropic

The release of Muse Wonder represents another step in Meta’s effort to compete with established leaders in advanced AI.

OpenAI and Anthropic have built strong positions through their frontier models, coding systems, and enterprise-focused AI tools. Meta, meanwhile, is pursuing a strategy that combines advanced model development with its large consumer technology ecosystem.

That ecosystem includes Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Meta’s growing collection of AI products. Integrating more capable models into these services could give Meta opportunities to reach users at a scale that many AI startups cannot easily match.

The company is also investing heavily in computing infrastructure and model development to support its longer-term ambitions.

However, the success of Muse Wonder will depend on more than benchmark results. Developers and consumers will need to see consistent performance, useful integrations, competitive costs, and reliable safeguards before the models can establish a lasting advantage.

Conclusion

Meta’s launch of Muse Wonder and Muse Wonder Full marks an important development in its strategy to become a stronger competitor in advanced artificial intelligence.

With features such as Active Memory and Active Focus, the company is placing particular emphasis on AI systems that can remember relevant information, work through difficult problems, and assist with complex tasks over time.

The models’ availability through Meta’s developer platforms also gives businesses and software developers an opportunity to explore their capabilities, while planned integration into the Muse assistant could expand their reach among consumers.

Still, Meta’s performance claims will need to be evaluated independently, and questions surrounding privacy, safety, reliability, and real-world usefulness remain important.

As the competition between Meta, OpenAI, and Anthropic intensifies, the next phase of AI development may be defined less by which chatbot produces the best answer and more by which system can reliably help people complete meaningful work.
