ChatGPT Writing Found Across One Third of Web Pages

AI Authorship Dominates the Web: Study Finds One Third of New Pages Show Signs of Machine Writing

A groundbreaking study from Pew Research released on Thursday has revealed that over one third of web pages published since the launch of ChatGPT show signs of being written by artificial intelligence. This finding corroborates other research detailing how much of the newer web is now either written by or substantially edited by AI, marking a significant shift in the digital landscape.

The report arrives shortly after internet infrastructure provider Cloudflare reported that bot web traffic had overtaken human web traffic, a milestone that was reached sooner than the company had estimated. However, Pew’s data focuses not on who or what is browsing the web, but on what is being browsed. And apparently, much of it is bots reading web pages written by other bots.

Methodology Behind the Findings

To compile the report, Pew used the Common Crawl web archive to collect nearly half a million English language web pages from the past five years, starting a couple of years before ChatGPT’s November 2022 release. The researchers then used Open Pangram’s technology to detect how many pages were likely written or heavily edited by AI.

In a random sample of 10,000 web pages collected in July 2026, around 10 percent showed significant signs of AI authorship. However, Pew pointed out that a random sample like this would inevitably include older web pages published before AI writing tools even existed, which could not have been AI written.

To get a better sense of how much of the web is now being written by AI, Pew filtered out the older web pages and focused only on those published after the release of ChatGPT. In this filtered snapshot, signs of AI authorship were found in over one third, or 35 percent, of the pages.

Domain Disparities

The study also revealed significant differences across domain types. URLs with a .com domain showed signs of AI authorship at around 10 times the rate of a .edu or .gov domain, both of which were around 1 percent AI authored. In addition, .org domains had only a 4.6 percent rate of AI authorship. This disparity suggests that commercial websites are far more likely to adopt AI writing tools than educational, governmental, or organizational sites.

Limitations and Caveats

The analysis is not perfect, and Pew acknowledges that Pangram, like other AI detection tools, can misclassify pages as AI written when they were not. However, at scale, the data is likely at least directionally correct, providing a valuable snapshot of the current state of web content creation.

Additionally, Pew found that other supposed tells of AI authorship had also increased over the years, including the use of em dashes, Oxford commas, and phrasing like “it’s not X, it’s Y,” among other linguistic patterns. These stylistic markers have become more prevalent as AI generated content has proliferated.

Implications for the Digital Ecosystem

The findings raise important questions about the nature of information consumption and trust online. As AI generated content becomes more prevalent, readers may find it increasingly difficult to distinguish between human written and machine generated content. This blurring of lines could have significant implications for journalism, education, marketing, and other fields where authorship and credibility are paramount.

The study also highlights the rapid adoption of AI tools across industries, particularly in commercial domains where efficiency and scale are critical. The .com domain dominance suggests that businesses are leading the charge in integrating AI into their content creation processes.

A Broader Trend

This research is part of a growing body of evidence documenting the transformative impact of generative AI on the internet. The fact that bot traffic has overtaken human traffic, combined with the prevalence of AI authored content, suggests that the web is becoming an increasingly automated environment. This trend raises questions about the future of human creativity and the role of AI in shaping public discourse.

The Future of Content Creation

As AI writing tools continue to improve and become more accessible, the percentage of AI authored content is likely to grow. This evolution presents both opportunities and challenges. On one hand, AI can help creators produce content more efficiently and at scale. On the other hand, the proliferation of AI generated content could lead to issues of authenticity, originality, and information quality.

The study from Pew Research serves as an important benchmark for understanding the current state of the web. As we move forward, it will be crucial to develop tools and strategies for identifying AI generated content, ensuring transparency, and maintaining trust in the information we consume.

Final Thoughts

The revelation that one third of web pages published since ChatGPT’s launch show signs of AI authorship is a testament to the rapid integration of artificial intelligence into our digital lives. While the implications of this shift are still unfolding, one thing is clear: the internet is undergoing a fundamental transformation, and AI is at the heart of it.

For readers, this means becoming more discerning consumers of information. For creators, it means navigating the balance between leveraging AI tools and maintaining authenticity. And for society as a whole, it means grappling with the evolving nature of authorship and the very definition of human creativity in the age of intelligent machines.
