ChatGPT Goes Unlimited: OpenAI Removes Text Chat Limits for Free Users
In a move that significantly lowers the barrier to advanced artificial intelligence, OpenAI has announced that it is removing all limits on text based chats for free users of ChatGPT. This change comes as the popular chatbot recently surpassed the milestone of 1 billion weekly active users, solidifying its position as a mainstream tool.
A New Default Model for All
The unlimited text experience will be powered by a new model, GPT-5.6 Luna, which will become the default for Free and Go tier users, replacing the previous GPT-5.5 version. This upgrade is not just about removing restrictions; it also brings improved performance. According to OpenAI’s internal evaluations, factual errors are 62 percent less common with GPT-5.6 Luna compared to its predecessor.
Introducing the “Think” Button
Free users will also gain access to a new “Think” button. This feature allows them to select higher reasoning power when tackling complex questions, giving users on the free tier a taste of the more deliberate, thoughtful processing typically reserved for premium models. While text chats are now unlimited, OpenAI clarified that separate limits will still apply for files, images, voice, and image generation.
Enhancements for Paying Subscribers
The update also brings significant improvements for Plus and Pro subscribers. They will receive an upgraded model, GPT-5.6 Sol, which is optimized for quick tasks such as questions, web research, advice, planning, writing, and decision making. This model is designed to provide more compact and robust answers, making interactions more efficient.
A notable new feature for these paying users is a “thinking slider.” This tool allows them to adjust exactly how much cognitive effort the model puts into an answer, giving them fine grained control over the balance between speed and depth based on the complexity of their query. For the GPT-5.6 Sol model, OpenAI’s evaluations show a 68 percent reduction in factual errors compared to the previous version.
Phased Rollout
The updated GPT-5.6 Sol model is available to Plus and Pro users immediately. The changes for Free and Go users, including unlimited text chats and the Think button, are scheduled to arrive this week, with full access expected by next week.
This move by OpenAI represents a significant shift in the accessibility of powerful artificial intelligence tools. By removing the text limit for free users, the company is likely aiming to increase user engagement, gather more data to refine its models, and maintain a competitive edge in the rapidly evolving artificial intelligence landscape.
