Amazon’s Panos Panay Predicts AI Devices Could Replace Apps

Amazon Executive Predicts AI Devices Could Replace Traditional Apps

Amazon is betting that the future of personal technology will depend less on opening individual apps and more on AI-powered devices that understand users’ needs and help complete tasks automatically.

Panos Panay, Amazon’s senior vice president of Devices, Alexa and Leo, shared this vision during an appearance at TechCrunch Disrupt on October 15, 2026. He described a future built around ambient computing, where artificial intelligence works quietly in the background to help people manage everyday activities without constantly interacting with screens.

His comments highlight a potential shift in how people use smartphones, wearables, and digital assistants as technology companies compete to make AI a more natural part of daily life.

A Future Beyond Opening Apps

Today, most smartphone users rely on individual applications to complete tasks. They open messaging apps to communicate, calendars to manage schedules, maps to navigate, and productivity tools to organize their work.

Panay believes this approach could gradually change as AI becomes more capable of understanding what people need.

Instead of opening an application and giving it specific instructions, users could rely on AI systems that recognize relevant context and help them take action.

For example, an AI assistant might identify an upcoming appointment, remind a user about an unfinished task, or summarize important details from a previous conversation. Rather than requiring users to search through multiple applications, the assistant could bring the information directly to them.

Panay suggested that a new generation of consumers may increasingly expect technology to understand their needs instead of requiring them to specify every action.

However, he did not suggest that smartphones or every existing application would disappear. Instead, he described an intelligence layer that could connect different devices and services.

Amazon Bets on Ambient AI Devices

Amazon is putting this vision into practice through its expanding portfolio of personal AI hardware, including new devices developed by Bee, the AI hardware company it acquired in 2025.

The new lineup includes a wearable band that can be worn on the wrist or as a pendant, alongside a compact device that attaches magnetically to the back of a smartphone.

These devices are designed to capture information about a user’s day, identify reminders and commitments, and provide useful summaries and insights.

Rather than requiring users to manually record every task, the devices aim to help them remember important details from conversations and daily activities.

Amazon’s broader strategy is to make AI available beyond traditional screens, allowing technology to assist users in the background while they focus on other things.

Privacy Remains a Major Challenge

Despite the potential benefits, ambient AI devices introduce important privacy questions.

Devices that listen to conversations or process surrounding audio must be designed carefully to prevent sensitive information from being exposed or misused.

Amazon says Bee processes raw audio in real time and deletes it afterward rather than retaining the original recordings. According to the company, conversation transcripts are encrypted using keys controlled by the user’s device, helping protect access to that information.

Panay emphasized that users must have control over their data and that privacy needs to be considered from the beginning of product development.

Even with these safeguards, consumers will need clear information about when devices are listening, what information is retained, how it is processed, and whether other people in a conversation have been informed.

The success of ambient AI may depend as much on public trust as on the technology itself.

Amazon Faces Competition in the Personal AI Market

Amazon is entering a growing market in which technology companies and startups are exploring AI-powered wearables and alternative computing devices.

Meta has developed AI-enabled wearable products, while OpenAI has been working on its own hardware ambitions. Other startups have also experimented with AI companions and devices designed to reduce dependence on smartphones.

The competition reflects a broader effort to establish new ways for people to interact with AI beyond conventional chat interfaces and mobile applications.

For Amazon, the opportunity is particularly significant because of its existing Alexa ecosystem, connected home products, and experience building consumer hardware.

If AI devices can reliably anticipate users’ needs and complete useful tasks, they could become an important part of Amazon’s long-term consumer technology strategy.

Will AI Really Replace Apps?

Although Panay’s vision points toward a future with fewer direct interactions with applications, replacing apps entirely will not be easy.

Many applications provide specialized tools, detailed interfaces, and features that users need to control directly. Banking, video editing, shopping, and professional software may continue to benefit from dedicated applications even as AI becomes more integrated into them.

AI systems must also demonstrate that they can perform tasks accurately, protect sensitive information, and work across different services without creating unnecessary complications.

A more realistic possibility is that apps become less visible to users as AI assistants coordinate tasks behind the scenes. The applications and services may still exist, but people could interact with them increasingly through a single assistant or connected device.

Conclusion

Panos Panay’s vision signals a possible new direction for personal computing, in which AI-powered devices help people manage their lives without requiring constant attention to screens and applications.

Amazon’s Bee devices represent an early example of this approach, combining wearable hardware, contextual information, and AI-generated reminders and insights.

Whether ambient computing becomes mainstream will depend on its usefulness, reliability, privacy protections, and ability to work across the services people already use.

One thing is clear: technology companies are increasingly competing not only to build better AI models, but also to determine how people will interact with artificial intelligence in everyday life.
