Fitbit founders launch Luffu Link, an LTE health and safety band

Fitbit Founders Return with Luffu Link: A Wearable Designed for Family Caregiving

After revolutionizing the fitness tracker industry, Fitbit co-founders James Park and Eric Friedman are back with a new venture that shifts the focus from personal fitness to family care. Their startup, Luffu, has launched the Luffu Link, an LTE-enabled health and safety band designed to be a “quiet guardian” for wearers, with a special emphasis on supporting family caregivers and monitoring the well-being of aging loved ones.

More Than Just a Tracker

The Luffu Link is a $250 wearable (preorder price; retail will be $300) that combines health sensing, voice logging, location awareness, and emergency communication into a single, screenless device. It’s available for preorder now and expected to ship in early 2027.

What sets the Link apart from traditional fitness trackers is its focus on context and connection. While it continuously collects standard health metrics like:

  • Activity and Sleep

  • Resting Heart Rate and Heart-Rate Variability (HRV)

  • Calories Burned and Breathing Rate

The device’s true value lies in the Luffu app’s AI, which analyzes this data to identify meaningful patterns and changes. As James Park explained, the goal isn’t to provide families with “another dashboard full of graphs,” but to answer key questions: “What changed? Does it matter? Does somebody need to know?”

Designed for Connection and Peace of Mind

The Link is built around the needs of family caregivers, who, according to Park, spend an average of 27 hours per week managing care. The device offers several key features to alleviate this burden:

  • Voice Logging: Users can press a button to record voice notes about medications, symptoms, meals, or mood. This information is organized by the app and incorporated into the family’s broader health context.
  • Location Awareness: Built-in GPS allows trusted contacts to see the wearer’s location history and receive alerts when they enter or leave specific areas.
  • Discreet Check-ins: A quick double-press lets the wearer check in with family without making a call or sending a text.
  • Emergency Help Requests: The built-in LTE connectivity (with data service included) allows wearers to send a voice message, location, and health data to trusted contacts with the press of a button even without a phone nearby.

A Purposeful, Jewelry-Inspired Design

Departing from the typical look of fitness wearables, the Link is designed to resemble jewelry. It comes in three colors halo gold, onyx black, and sterling blue and is intentionally screenless.

“There’s a trend to have no screens on this new class of wearables, but here, it’s very purposeful,” Park noted. “We want to be in the background. Link is designed to be on your wrist as a quiet guardian throughout your day.”

The Bigger Picture: An Intelligent Family Care System

The Link is the second piece of Luffu’s broader vision. The company first launched its health-monitoring app earlier this year, which uses AI to gather family information, learn daily patterns, and flag notable changes. The wearable extends this system by providing continuous, real-time data from the wearer’s perspective.

The startup has already teased its next step: a home device that will bring the Luffu system into the household, further solidifying its mission to create an intelligent family care ecosystem.

A New Chapter for the Fitbit Founders

For Park and Friedman, Luffu is a deeply personal project born from their own experiences caring for aging parents. They saw a fragmented landscape of tools for caregivers and set out to build a more integrated solution. With the Luffu Link, they’re leveraging their expertise in wearable technology to address a growing societal need, offering a way for families to stay connected and informed about their loved ones’ health, without making them feel constantly monitored.
