Grok keeps sending gibberish responses to users

Grok Users Baffled as Chatbot Suffers Gibberish Response Glitch

An unusual glitch has resulted in xAI’s Grok chatbot speaking gibberish to many users, leaving them confused and frustrated. The issue appears to have started as early as Wednesday morning, with affected users reporting nonsensical responses that make little to no coherent sense.

After asking the model to generate a PDF, one user received the baffling response: “match it without and your they and two for planets can practical and often cheese…” with similar nonsense continuing for several paragraphs. Another user checking source links found a string of links to reinforcement learning research sites, adding to the confusion about what was causing the bizarre outputs.

The Scope of the Issue

Affected users who spoke to TechCrunch said they were using Grok Lite and noticed the issues as early as Wednesday morning. However, TechCrunch was unable to reproduce the issue in their own testing, suggesting that the glitch is likely affecting only a small subset of users. Despite this limited scope, the result has been a lot of confused Grok users.

The chatbot’s Reddit community has been overwhelmed with complaints from users experiencing the gibberish responses. Some users reported that refreshing the session often restores normal function, but others noted that the nonsense continued even after multiple refreshes. The bug appears to be limited to direct queries on Grok.com, as the Grok account on X.com has been unaffected.

Official Response from xAI

Responding to unhappy users, the Grok account confirmed the issues on X, acknowledging the problem and offering guidance. “That pure word salad is a rare temporary generation glitch,” the account wrote Thursday morning. “Official status shows all Grok services fully operational with no incidents. Start a fresh chat or regenerate it usually clears right away. Sorry about the gibberish.”

This official response suggests that xAI is aware of the issue and is working to address it, though the status page indicated that all services were operational, which may have added to user confusion about why the glitch was occurring.

Broader Context at xAI

The gibberish response issue comes at a time when xAI has experienced significant staff turnover. According to a report from The Information in May, the company has lost most of its founding team and at least 50 researchers and engineers in recent months. This level of personnel change could potentially impact the stability and development of the company’s AI models.

Despite these challenges, xAI released its most recent foundation model in July, describing it as “an Opus-class model, but faster, more token-efficient and lower cost.” The company continues to position Grok as a competitive AI assistant in a crowded market that includes established players like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, and other emerging AI platforms.

User Experience and Trust Implications

For users, encountering a gibberish response from an AI assistant can be disorienting and frustrating, particularly when relying on the tool for important tasks or research. While the glitch appears to be temporary and fixable with a refresh, it raises questions about the reliability and consistency of AI systems that are increasingly integrated into daily work and communication.

The incident also highlights the challenges that AI companies face in maintaining consistent performance across their platforms. As these systems become more complex and widely used, even small glitches can have significant impacts on user experience and trust.

Looking Forward

As xAI works to resolve this issue and prevent similar occurrences in the future, users will be watching closely to see how the company responds. The official acknowledgment of the problem is a positive step, but ensuring that such glitches become increasingly rare will be important for maintaining user confidence.

For now, affected users can try the recommended fixes of starting a fresh chat or regenerating responses. And while the word salad may have been confusing, the incident serves as a reminder that even advanced AI systems are not immune to occasional technical hiccups.
