SpaceX doubles revenue on Anthropic and Google compute deals, Starlink growth

The New Space Economy: How SpaceX’s Pivot to AI Compute Is Reshaping Its Financial Future

SpaceX has delivered a stunning financial performance that redefines what a space company can be. The company doubled its revenue compared to the previous year, reaching $7.8 billion  in the second quarter of 2026, a remarkable 92 percent jump from $4 billion in the same period of 2025. This growth was driven by two distinct engines: the continued expansion of its Starlink satellite internet service and a strategic pivot into renting out computing power to artificial intelligence leaders Anthropic and Google. The results reveal a company that is no longer simply a rocket manufacturer or satellite operator but an emerging powerhouse in the cloud computing and AI infrastructure space.

The AI Compute Pivot

Nearly $2 billion of SpaceX’s revenue growth came from its AI division, representing a significant strategic shift for the company. This division originated as Elon Musk’s own AI startup xAI before being absorbed into the rocket company. The timing of this pivot is notable, as both compute deals with Anthropic and Google were announced in the weeks before SpaceX’s historic initial public offering, signaling to investors that the company had diversified revenue streams beyond its core space operations.

The move into AI compute was born partly from necessity. xAI had been struggling to catch up to leading AI labs like OpenAI and Anthropic, and the company faced repeated controversies. These challenges prompted SpaceX to repurpose much of its existing AI infrastructure, including two data centers in and near Memphis, Tennessee, originally built to train xAI’s models. By pivoting this capacity toward hosting services for other AI companies, SpaceX found a more reliable revenue source.

The financial impact has been substantial. Chief financial officer Bret Johnsen revealed on the earnings call that the incremental revenue from new hosting deals generated high incremental EBITDA margins as the company monetized available compute capacity. More significantly, SpaceX has an additional $6.7 billion of cloud services revenue under contract over a six month period beginning in October 2026. Johnsen also expressed confidence that, once the company fully integrates AI startup Cursor, it will reach a $100 billion annualized revenue run rate by the end of the year.

Elon Musk went even further, stating that the $100 billion ARR target is not a question mark but essentially assured even if the company did nothing additional. He suggested the actual figure would likely be higher, reflecting his characteristic optimism about SpaceX’s trajectory.

Starlink’s Continued Dominance

While the AI compute deals generated significant attention, Starlink remained the other major growth driver. The satellite internet service contributed $1.7 billion in revenue growth, demonstrating its continued expansion and market penetration. Starlink has become SpaceX’s most visible consumer facing product, providing internet connectivity to remote areas and increasingly competing with traditional telecommunications providers.

The combination of Starlink’s growth and the new AI compute business has transformed SpaceX’s financial profile. The company still reported a net loss of $541 million in the quarter, but this represents a substantial improvement from the $1 billion loss in the second quarter of 2025. The narrowing losses suggest that SpaceX is moving closer to consistent profitability, even as it continues to invest heavily in future growth.

The IPO and Market Performance

SpaceX’s first quarterly earnings report came nearly two months after the company completed the largest initial public offering in history. The company raised more than $85 billion and went public at a valuation of $1.75 trillion. The market cap briefly soared in the first days of trading, surpassing Amazon and nearly equaling Microsoft, reflecting intense investor enthusiasm for the company’s unique position at the intersection of space, satellite communications, and AI infrastructure.

However, the stock has experienced volatility since that initial surge. Shares have fallen below the IPO price of $135 per share, reportedly set by Elon Musk himself. The stock closed at just over $125 on Tuesday and sank as much as 8 percent in after hours trading. This decline may reflect broader market conditions, concerns about valuation, or investor uncertainty about the company’s path to consistent profitability.

Financial Position and Investment

Following a successful post IPO bond sale, SpaceX now possesses a $100 billion war chest, providing substantial financial flexibility. The company is not slowing its investment pace, reporting more than $28 billion in capital expenditures through the first half of 2026, up dramatically from just $7 billion through the first six months of 2025. This aggressive spending reflects SpaceX’s commitment to maintaining its technological leadership and expanding its infrastructure.

The capital expenditure strategy encompasses multiple fronts, including continued development of its Starlink constellation, expansion of its data center capacity for AI compute, and ongoing investment in rocket development. The company’s ability to sustain such high levels of investment while narrowing its losses demonstrates the scale of its financial resources and the confidence of its investors.

Strategic Implications

SpaceX’s transformation into an AI compute provider represents a significant evolution of its business model. The company has leveraged its existing infrastructure and technical expertise to enter a rapidly growing market where demand for computing power far exceeds supply. This pivot also reduces SpaceX’s dependence on government contracts and satellite launches, diversifying its revenue streams in a way that could make the company more resilient to sector specific downturns.

The integration of xAI into SpaceX’s operations and the subsequent pivot to compute hosting reflects a pragmatic approach to technology development. Rather than continuing to compete directly with established AI labs, SpaceX has found a way to monetize its infrastructure while maintaining relationships with potential competitors. The contracts with Anthropic and Google represent a form of coopetition that benefits all parties.

Challenges Ahead

Despite the impressive revenue growth, SpaceX faces several challenges. The company continues to lose money, and the path to consistent profitability remains uncertain. The AI compute market is highly competitive, with established cloud providers and other data center operators vying for customers. SpaceX must maintain its infrastructure and continue to attract clients to sustain its growth trajectory.

The controversies that plagued xAI, including issues with its Grok chatbot, raise questions about the company’s ability to manage AI technologies responsibly. As SpaceX expands its role in AI infrastructure, it will need to address concerns about the ethical implications of the technology it supports and the content it enables.

The stock’s decline below the IPO price also suggests that investor enthusiasm may have been tempered by the company’s ongoing losses and the challenges of integrating its diverse businesses. SpaceX must demonstrate that its revenue growth can translate into sustainable profitability to maintain investor confidence.

Conclusion

SpaceX’s second quarter earnings reveal a company in transition, successfully leveraging its technological capabilities to enter new markets while maintaining growth in its core businesses. The strategic pivot to AI compute has already generated substantial revenue and secured long term contracts, positioning SpaceX as a significant player in the cloud computing ecosystem. Combined with Starlink’s continued expansion, these developments have transformed SpaceX’s financial profile and created a more diversified revenue base.

The company still faces significant challenges, including the need to achieve consistent profitability and manage the complexities of its expanding operations. However, the strong revenue growth, substantial cash reserves, and ambitious projections suggest that SpaceX has positioned itself for continued expansion. The coming quarters will reveal whether the company can sustain its momentum and realize the ambitious financial targets set by its leadership, but the trajectory established in this earnings report signals a new phase in SpaceX’s evolution from a space company to a diversified technology enterprise.
