ChatGPT Reaches 100 Million Weekly Users in India as OpenAI Expands Global Footprint

Editorial Team February 16, 2026
ChatGPT Launches Global Group Chats

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has revealed that India now boasts 100 million weekly active ChatGPT users, making the South Asian nation the company’s second-largest market after the United States. The milestone underscores India’s growing importance in the global AI landscape as tech giants race to capture the world’s most populous country’s massive digital audience.

Details of India’s AI Adoption Surge

The user growth figures were disclosed ahead of the government-hosted India AI Impact Summit in New Delhi, where Altman and other leading AI executives are gathering to discuss the future of artificial intelligence. According to Altman’s article published in the Times of India, India also leads globally in student usage of ChatGPT, highlighting the platform’s significant penetration in educational settings.

This growth comes as OpenAI has strategically adapted its approach for India’s price-sensitive market. The company opened a New Delhi office in August 2025 and introduced a sub-$5 ChatGPT Go tier specifically for Indian users, which was later made free for one year. These localization efforts have clearly paid dividends, contributing to ChatGPT’s overall surge to 800 million weekly active users globally as of October 2025.

Industry Impact and Competitive Landscape

The Indian market has become a crucial battleground for AI companies seeking to expand their global reach. Google has similarly targeted Indian students with free one-year subscriptions to its AI Pro plan, while the country accounts for the highest global usage of Gemini for learning applications. This competition reflects the broader recognition that India’s young, tech-savvy population represents a massive opportunity for AI adoption.

The India AI Impact Summit, featuring leaders from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta, Microsoft, and Nvidia, demonstrates the strategic importance global tech companies place on the Indian market. Political leaders including Emmanuel Macron and other heads of state are also expected to attend, spotlighting India’s ambition to position itself as a central player in global AI governance and development.

Market Response and Economic Implications

While the user growth is impressive, it also highlights a key challenge for AI companies in India: converting widespread adoption into sustainable revenue. India’s price-sensitive market and infrastructure constraints have made monetization more complex than in developed economies. However, the sheer scale of adoption provides a foundation for long-term growth as the market matures.

Altman emphasized that India’s focus on “access, practical AI literacy, and the infrastructure that supports widespread adoption” positions the country well to “broaden who benefits from the technology and to help shape how democratic AI is adopted at scale.” This suggests that India could serve as a model for AI deployment in other emerging markets worldwide.

Expert Analysis and Future Outlook

The rapid adoption of ChatGPT in India reflects several key factors: the country’s large English-speaking population, widespread smartphone penetration, and a young demographic eager to embrace new technologies. Educational institutions have been particularly quick to integrate AI tools into learning workflows, creating a generation of AI-native users who will likely drive future adoption.

Industry experts note that India’s AI user base could influence how global AI companies develop and deploy their technologies. The country’s diverse linguistic landscape, varied economic conditions, and unique cultural context provide valuable testing grounds for AI applications that could later be applied in other emerging markets.

What This Means for Global AI Development

India’s emergence as a major AI market has significant implications for the global technology landscape. The country’s massive user base gives it considerable influence over how AI technologies evolve, particularly in areas like multilingual support, educational applications, and cost-effective deployment strategies.

For OpenAI and its competitors, success in India could provide a template for expansion into other large, price-sensitive markets across Asia, Africa, and Latin America. The lessons learned from adapting AI tools for Indian users – including pricing strategies, localization efforts, and educational partnerships – could prove invaluable for global expansion efforts.

The growth also underscores the democratizing potential of AI technology. As Altman noted, there’s a risk that uneven access could concentrate AI’s economic gains in too few hands, making India’s broad-based adoption a positive development for ensuring AI benefits reach diverse populations worldwide.
