Nvidia Weighs Cosigning Debt for Nscale’s West Virginia AI Data Center
The chipmaker may guarantee billions in construction financing for a facility leased to Anthropic, a sign of how far AI companies will go to keep buildouts alive as investor nerves fray.
Nvidia is reportedly in talks to back billions of dollars in debt financing for Nscale’s planned AI data center in West Virginia, a facility whose first building has already been leased to Anthropic under a $44.6 billion contract. If finalized, the arrangement would mark a notable escalation in how Nvidia supports the AI infrastructure boom, moving beyond lease and chip purchase guarantees into construction financing itself.
What Nvidia Would Actually Do
According to reporting from The Information, later corroborated by Bloomberg, the structure under discussion is a residual value guarantee. Under this arrangement, Nvidia would step in if Nscale defaulted on construction payments, temporarily take over the facility, and help find a buyer and new tenant.
The guarantee would help Nscale secure financing for the electricity and construction costs of its West Virginia campus. It is a meaningful shift, since Nvidia’s prior support for cloud providers has largely covered leases and chip purchases rather than the physical buildout of data centers.
The Stakes for Nscale
Nscale is seeking to go public at a valuation of up to $35 billion, despite mounting skepticism about its ability to deliver on its ambitious pipeline.
The gap between promise and delivery is stark. As of August, the company had roughly 25,000 advanced AI chips running, a fraction of the nearly 500,000 it plans to deploy. Its West Virginia campus has also faced local complications, with construction runoff flooding nearby homes more than once, though the project won state certification in September after months of negotiation.
Elsewhere, the company’s expansion has hit walls. This month, Microsoft pulled out of a planned Nscale site in England after grid power availability was pushed into the 2030s.
Why Anthropic Is Central to the Deal
Anthropic’s contract covers the first 460 megawatt building at the West Virginia campus, which is expected to run on Nvidia’s next generation Vera Rubin chips. The two companies are reportedly also discussing a second deal worth roughly $45 billion for another building.
One investor told The Information that Anthropic’s involvement likely explains Nvidia’s interest in keeping the project on track. The guarantee would secure a major customer for Nvidia’s chips while deepening its financial ties to Nscale.
Anthropic itself is under financial scrutiny. The company filed to go public this week, but Blackstone has warned investors that Anthropic may receive a below investment grade credit rating after its IPO. A junk rating would raise Anthropic’s borrowing costs and could push it to keep leaning on stronger partners to back its debt.
The Broader Picture: Neoclouds Under Pressure
Nvidia has become a major financial backer of the AI sector, extending roughly $170 billion in investments and credit support to neoclouds and large customers, according to The Information. That includes $1 billion in convertible financing committed to Nscale in September.
Neoclouds, which rent out AI computing power without a cash rich core business behind them, have come under pressure from investors. Shares of CoreWeave, Nebius, and IREN had each fallen more than 30% in October as of last week, CNBC reported.
Conclusion
Nvidia’s willingness to cosign Nscale’s construction debt shows how central the chipmaker has become to the financial plumbing of the AI ecosystem. For Nscale, the guarantee could be the difference between breaking ground and stalling out. For Anthropic, it offers a stronger partner standing behind the infrastructure it depends on. And for the wider market, it is a clear signal that the AI buildout is increasingly being held together by Nvidia’s balance sheet as investor patience wears thin.
