Elon Musk is ‘truly a genius,’ says Vladimir Putin

Putin Calls Musk a “Truly a Genius” as Russia Pursues Its Own Starlink Rival

Russian President Vladimir Putin publicly praised Elon Musk this week, calling the SpaceX CEO “truly a genius” while confirming that the two are in close contact regarding Rassvet, Russia’s state-backed answer to Starlink. The remarks, delivered at the Russia-Africa Summit on Wednesday, shine a light on a relationship with significant implications for global security and the future of satellite communications.

Putin Acknowledges Russia’s Lag Behind SpaceX

Speaking at the summit, Putin was candid about the gap between SpaceX and Russia’s domestic satellite ambitions.

“Elon Musk is a genius, truly a genius,” Putin said. “He has already had more than 5,000 such satellites in orbit, while we are only taking the first steps.”

The admission underscores just how far ahead SpaceX has moved in the low Earth orbit satellite race. Starlink’s constellation now numbers in the thousands, while Rassvet remains in its earliest stages. Putin’s confirmation that he and Musk are in “close contact” about the project raises fresh questions about the nature and scope of their communication.

Why This Relationship Matters

A deepening rapport between Putin and Musk carries serious geopolitical weight, particularly regarding the war in Ukraine. Musk has recently voiced frustration with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, whose country has been fighting a Russian invasion since 2022. Those comments have alarmed Kyiv and its allies.

After the United States eased sanctions on Russia earlier this month, Ukrainian officials grew concerned that Ukraine could lose access to Starshield, the military version of Starlink that Ukrainian forces depend on for battlefield communications. Those concerns proved to have some merit.

Connectivity Disruptions Raise Alarm

For roughly ten days earlier this month, Ukrainian drones experienced frequent losses of connectivity. According to the Wall Street Journal, Musk ordered SpaceX to limit Ukraine’s Starlink access, though other reports suggest the order came from the White House.

Musk defended the move in a post on X, claiming Ukraine had violated Starlink’s terms of service by using the technology for “offensive drone strikes to kill people.” Service in Ukraine appears to have since returned to normal operations.

Musk has been blunt about the stakes. “Were Starlink to be turned off, the Ukrainian front line would collapse immediately,” he wrote on X. “This is NOT a threat, it is simply a statement of fact.”

The Bigger Picture

The episode highlights a striking reality of modern warfare: a single private company, and the preferences of its CEO, can influence the trajectory of a major conflict. It also illustrates how commercial satellite networks have become strategic infrastructure, subject to the same political pressures as state assets.

Musk’s willingness to engage directly with Moscow while simultaneously controlling connectivity critical to Ukraine’s defense places him in an unusually influential position. Whether that influence serves as a stabilizing force or a source of leverage remains an open question.

Conclusion

Putin’s praise for Musk, paired with confirmation of direct contact over Russia’s satellite ambitions, signals a relationship that extends well beyond business. For Ukraine, the lesson is sobering. Dependence on Starlink means dependence on the judgment of a CEO who is openly critical of its government and increasingly engaged with its adversary. As Russia works to develop Rassvet and reduce its reliance on foreign technology, the coming years will determine whether Starlink remains an indispensable lifeline for Ukraine or becomes a point of vulnerability. Either way, the intersection of private enterprise and state power has rarely been more consequential.
