SpaceX’s AI Business Is Beating Expectations and It’s Now Half the Company
SpaceX’s pivot from rocket company to AI powerhouse is accelerating. In Q3 2026, artificial intelligence accounted for 52% of revenue, with the company’s “Super Intelligence” segment outperforming investor forecasts and pushing the company back into profitability.
The Numbers That Matter
SpaceX reported $14.6 billion in third quarter revenue, driven by growth across all segments but led by its renamed “Super Intelligence” business line. That segment generated **$7.5 billion in revenue and **$431 million in profit**, a figure that would have been higher without $1.2 billion in one time stock based compensation expenses tied to the Cursor acquisition.
The AI business now encompasses the recently acquired Cursor coding tool, the Grok bot, and most significantly SpaceX’s burgeoning neocloud business, which now boasts 1.7 GW of compute capacity.
Total revenue also benefited from approximately $1 billion in income related to Bitcoin price recovery and unspecified related party income.
Despite those gains, SpaceX’s total capital expenditures reached $19.6 billion** in the quarter. CFO Bret Johnsen said the company would spend **$35 billion to $40 billion on new capital investments in the fourth quarter alone, as it builds out its second data center project, Colossus II, and continues investment in Starship.
The Infrastructure Bet: Power, Cooling, and “Little League”
Speaking during a live streamed investor discussion, CEO Elon Musk said he is spending four days a week in Memphis, Tennessee, the site of Colossus II, working to bring the data center online.
“People are starting to realize [that] the constraint on deployment of super intelligence is more in power and cooling and infrastructure than it is in chips.”
Musk argued that SpaceX’s engineering capabilities give it an unusual advantage in solving those constraints. He pointed to turbine manufacturers facing 12 to 18 month delays in obtaining the metal blades and vanes required for data center power generation, delays SpaceX is now circumventing by using metal casting capabilities developed for its rocket programs.
“This is a bit like the New York Yankees playing in Little League. It’s not fair, but the net result is being able to deploy power cooling infrastructure at a rate that is vastly faster than anyone else.”
Starship and Starlink: Still Core to the Story
The AI pivot hasn’t sidelined SpaceX’s space ambitions. Musk said the next Starship test flight, expected in November, would attempt to recover both the first stage booster and the second stage, a “massive technology milestone” that would be followed by the true goal of reflying both stages.
Meanwhile, Starlink reached 13.6 million consumers, with Musk predicting that the growth of AI agents will drive further demand for connectivity.
Back to Profitability With Room to Run
SpaceX reported net income of $4.4 billion**, a sharp turnaround from the **$1 billion loss in the same quarter last year. For the first nine months of 2026, however, the company still carries a net loss of $413 million, meaning it has ground to make up if it wants to finish the year in the black.
Musk took a particularly bullish stance on the Super Intelligence segment, predicting that SpaceX’s annual recurring revenue by the end of 2027 will land “somewhere between $500 billion and $1 trillion.” More concretely, Johnsen forecast total revenue for Q1 2027 in the range of $33 billion to $37 billion.
Conclusion
SpaceX is no longer just a space company that dabbles in AI. With AI now generating more than half its revenue, a neocloud business scaling rapidly, and infrastructure investments that dwarf its quarterly profits, the company is betting that the constraints on superintelligence deployment, namely power, cooling, and physical infrastructure, are problems its rocket engineers are uniquely positioned to solve. The coming quarters will test whether that bet pays off. For now, the numbers suggest it is working better than investors expected.
