Tesla Unveils SpaceX-Powered Roadster That Can Perform Midair Stunts
Tesla has finally revealed its long-awaited next-generation Roadster, showcasing an electric sports car equipped with SpaceX-inspired thrusters designed to push the limits of acceleration and vehicle performance.
Unveiled by Elon Musk at an event in Texas on October 15, 2026, the redesigned Roadster featured a dramatic demonstration involving an inverted ramp, midair maneuvers, and a controlled landing. Tesla also demonstrated the vehicle jumping over other cars, presenting a vision of an electric sports car unlike anything currently available to ordinary drivers.
Despite the spectacular unveiling, customers will have to wait longer before the vehicle reaches production. Musk said Tesla expects to begin building the new Roadster in 2028.
A Sports Car With SpaceX Technology
The most unusual feature of the new Roadster is its integration of technology developed in collaboration with SpaceX, Musk’s aerospace company.
The vehicle uses cold-gas thrusters supplied by compressed air to help produce its extraordinary maneuvers. According to Tesla engineering vice president Lars Moravy, the system incorporates 10 thrusters connected to compressed-air storage tanks containing approximately 600 liters of air.
During the demonstration, the vehicle used its thrusters to rotate in midair and descend toward the ground. Tesla also showcased a system that allows the car to travel upside down along a specially designed ramp.
The company says the technology is intended to improve performance beyond conventional electric vehicle capabilities. However, the demonstration does not establish that every advertised maneuver will be practical or legal on public roads.
Tesla Claims Acceleration From Zero to 60 MPH in One Second
Tesla made several ambitious performance claims during the presentation, including acceleration from zero to 60 miles per hour in approximately one second.
The company also says the Roadster will exceed 230 mph and deliver around 300 miles of range on a single charge.
These figures would place the Roadster among the most extreme performance cars ever proposed for the consumer market. Nevertheless, the specifications remain manufacturer claims, and independent testing of a production vehicle will be needed to establish its real-world capabilities.
Tesla has not announced a final purchase price for the redesigned model.
Three Versions of the Roadster
Tesla plans to offer the Roadster in three configurations: Performance, Thrust, and Rocket.
Performance: Designed as a road-ready, two-seat sports car, this version features active aerodynamics and a multi-mode suction system intended to improve traction and performance.
Thrust: This configuration adds rear-mounted cold-gas thrusters and is positioned as a more aggressive, track-focused version. Tesla says the additional hardware will enable acceleration from zero to 60 mph in less than one second.
Rocket: The most ambitious configuration is designed around 10 cold-gas thrusters positioned around the vehicle. Tesla describes it as an air-ready, single-seat model and is offering it by invitation.
Tesla’s reservation page listed deposits of $50,000 for the Performance version and $250,000 for the Thrust version. The Rocket version was described as invitation-only. These amounts are reservation payments, not confirmed final purchase prices.
A Design Inspired by Fighter Aircraft
The redesigned Roadster features a sharp, angular exterior that differs noticeably from the concept Tesla originally presented in 2017.
Tesla says the new design draws inspiration from aircraft such as the SR-71 Blackbird reconnaissance aircraft and the F-35 fighter jet. Its low profile, sculpted bodywork, and dramatic proportions also evoke the futuristic vehicles frequently seen in science-fiction films.
The interior includes a two-seat configuration in the standard versions, butterfly-style doors, and a large central display.
Musk described the Roadster as a culmination of work by Tesla and SpaceX engineers, positioning it as a showcase for the technical capabilities of both companies.
A Project Nearly Nine Years in the Making
The unveiling marks a major milestone for a vehicle that has faced repeated delays.
Tesla first introduced the second-generation Roadster in 2017, promising a dramatic improvement over its original sports car. The company subsequently postponed its planned production several times as it prioritized other vehicles and projects.
Musk began discussing the possibility of incorporating SpaceX thrusters in 2018. The idea has since become a central part of the new Roadster’s identity.
The repeated delays have also frustrated some reservation holders, including high-profile customers who have publicly questioned when the vehicle would finally arrive.
The latest unveiling provides a clearer picture of Tesla’s ambitions, but the 2028 production target means the company still has considerable engineering and manufacturing work ahead.
Safety and Road Legality Remain Important Questions
The Roadster’s unusual propulsion system raises questions about how the vehicle will operate outside controlled demonstrations.
Compressed-air thrusters, high acceleration, and midair maneuvers introduce engineering challenges involving stability, occupant protection, braking, and the safe operation of the vehicle around other road users.
The vehicle’s ability to perform a demonstration stunt does not automatically mean it can safely or legally repeat that maneuver on public roads. Its more extreme capabilities may require restricted environments, specialized operating procedures, or limitations imposed by regulators.
Tesla will need to demonstrate that the production vehicle meets applicable safety and roadworthiness requirements in the markets where it intends to sell it.
More Than a Car for Tesla
The Roadster is not simply another addition to Tesla’s electric vehicle lineup. It also serves as a high-profile demonstration of the engineering ambitions shared by Tesla and SpaceX.
Musk has acknowledged that the vehicle may not significantly change Tesla’s revenue by itself. Its value may instead
