Elon Musk’s latest Boring Company pitch involves a Hyperloop between Austin and San Antonio

The Hyperloop Hits Texas: Musk Pitches 30-Minute Austin to San Antonio Run

Elon Musk is dusting off the Hyperloop playbook, and this time, the pitch is deep in the heart of Texas. According to a recent report, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX recently took to social media to announce that his tunneling startup, The Boring Company, is working on a “simple precursor Hyperloop” connecting Austin and San Antonio  a project that, if realized, promises to slash travel time between the two booming metro areas to less than 30 minutes.

The Pitch

The announcement was characteristically casual. Musk made the comments in reply to an AI-generated video depicting a generic science fiction future with human colonies on other worlds. Re-posting the video, Musk declared, “This is the future we shall bring into being,” before pivoting to the Texas infrastructure project.

The Boring Company’s official account chimed in shortly after, stating it “would be excited and honored to build this massive infrastructure project.”

For Musk, this is framed as a practical step toward the futuristic transportation method he popularized nearly a decade ago. The Hyperloop concept involves pods traveling at high speeds through low-pressure tubes. However, Musk described this specific Texas proposal as a “simple precursor,” suggesting a scaled-down or early-stage version of the technology.

The Reality Check

While the Austin-San Antonio corridor is one of the fastest-growing regions in the United States, Musk’s announcement arrives with a heavy dose of skepticism from industry watchers.

The Boring Company has a well-documented history of announcing ambitious projects that never quite materialize. High-profile proposals for tunnel systems in Chicago, Los Angeles, and a “D.C. to New York” loop have largely stalled or disappeared. The company’s only operating transit system is the Vegas Loop, which uses Teslas to shuttle passengers through tunnels beneath the Las Vegas Convention Center and surrounding areas.

Despite the spotty track record, the company has shown it can raise capital. TechCrunch notes that The Boring Company recently raised a $3 billion funding round led by the United Arab Emirates, giving it the financial runway to pursue larger infrastructure bets.

The Vision vs. The Critics

Musk’s announcement highlights the dichotomy of his public persona: the hard-charging industrialist versus the sci-fi dreamer. Critics have long argued that his vision for the future is inspired more by pulp science fiction and comic books than practical engineering.

Historian Jill Lepore recently told TechCrunch that Musk seems to favor sci-fi that “completely defeats and defies all of his political beliefs,” suggesting a disconnect between the libertarian leanings of his business empire and the utopian, sometimes authoritarian, futures depicted in the media he references.

The Bottom Line

For now, the Austin-San Antonio Hyperloop remains a pitch rather than a shovel-ready project. But if Musk can pull it off, it could fundamentally change the way Texas’s two biggest tech hubs interact  turning a tedious highway crawl into a 30-minute underground sprint.
