Meta expands subscription push with new AI-focused plans

Meta’s AI Monetization Era Begins: Inside the New “Meta One” Subscription Plans

Meta is officially making its move to turn artificial intelligence from a costly research project into a recurring revenue stream.

On Tuesday, the tech giant unveiled Meta One, a sweeping expansion of its subscription strategy that moves beyond simple profile customizations and dives deep into premium AI capabilities. Following a massive $14.3 billion investment in Scale AI in 2025, which brought in Alexandr Wang to lead AI efforts, Meta is now looking to monetize its “Muse” AI models across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.

Here is everything you need to know about Meta’s new tiered subscription plans, the features they unlock, and why this is a pivotal moment for the company’s bottom line.

The Tipping Point: From “Plus” to “Pro”

Meta’s journey into subscriptions began earlier this year with the launch of basic “Plus” tiers (Instagram Plus, Facebook Plus, and WhatsApp Plus) priced between $2.99 and $3.99 per month. Those plans offered cosmetic upgrades like super reactions and story insights.

According to market intelligence firm Appfigures, those entry level plans are already paying off. As of the week of September 9, Instagram’s daily worldwide revenue averaged $1.2 million (a 475% increase), while Facebook reached $528,000 daily (a 143% increase).

Building on this momentum, Meta is now introducing two distinct categories of subscriptions: one for AI power users and one for businesses and creators.

1. For the AI Power User: Core and Premium

For everyday users who want to harness the power of Meta’s generative AI, there are two new consumer tiers:

Meta One Core ($7.99 per month): Includes all the previous “Plus” features across the three major apps, plus expanded AI usage.

Meta One Premium ($19.99 per month): The flagship consumer tier offering the highest usage limits.

What’s Inside:
The primary selling point here is access to Muse Image and Muse Video, allowing users to generate and edit content directly within the apps. Subscribers also get access to the AI powered Restyle tool on Instagram, voice effects, and advanced creative tools.

Note: Meta has declined to specify exact usage caps for these tiers, noting that limits may vary by “country, surface, and system conditions.”

2. For Creators and Businesses: The B2B Push

Meta is also aggressively targeting the creator economy with four new business focused tiers ranging from $14.99 to $499 per month.

Plan Starting Price Key Features
Essential $14.99 per month Meta Business Agent access, verified badge, impersonation detection.
Advanced $49.99 per month Story scheduling (30 days), exportable analytics, team access, deep audience insights.
Expert $149 per month Highest levels of feature access and Meta Business Agent capacity.
Max $499 per month Maximum capacity for large scale operations and agent usage.

Both the Essential and Advanced plans introduce a new “enhanced profile” that showcases a business’s website, physical locations, and reviews. Creators also get a bold “Follow” button on Reels and automated follow invitations for engaged viewers.

Looking ahead, Meta plans to add “Edits Plus” a subscription for its content creation app, Edits, which will offer more cloud storage and additional AI assistant usage.

Why This Matters: The $20 Billion Question

The launch of Meta One is a strategic necessity. With AI infrastructure costs skyrocketing, the company needs to prove to investors that its massive spending will yield returns.

The numbers suggest the strategy is working. Appfigures data shows that U.S. users accounted for 32% of Instagram’s and 39% of Facebook’s revenue following the initial subscription rollout, roughly 10% above historical baselines.

The financial forecasts are even more bullish. BNP Paribas estimates Meta’s subscription push will add $13.5 billion in revenue by 2028, while Truist projects an additional $20 billion by 2030.

The Takeaway

While the sheer number of tiers (Core, Premium, Essential, Advanced, Expert, Max) might be confusing for the average consumer, the strategy is clear: Meta is no longer just an ad company.

By bundling its “Plus” features with high value AI generation tools, Meta is betting that users and businesses are willing to pay a premium for productivity and creativity. If the early revenue spikes from the basic “Plus” plans are any indication, the appetite for Meta’s premium ecosystem is real.
