Tesla says it will finally unveil the second generation Roadster on October 1

The Wait is Almost Over: Tesla Teases October 1 Unveiling for the Second Generation Roadster

It is the car that has been perpetually “two years away,” but it seems the wait is finally nearing its end. After nearly a decade of delays, broken promises, and shifting timelines, Tesla has officially signaled that the second generation Roadster is ready for its close up.

In a cryptic post on X (formerly Twitter) this Saturday, Tesla simply wrote, “Go for launch,” accompanied by a graphic featuring the date 10.01.

For the legions of fans who put down deposits back in 2017, that date of October 1 cannot come soon enough. But what can we actually expect from the unveiling, and is the car finally ready for production? Here is everything we know so far.

A SpaceX Collaboration

The teaser graphic was not just a date. It also offered a major hint regarding the car’s controversial performance specs. The image appears to allude to the cold gas thrusters previously promised by Elon Musk.

These thrusters, which are being developed in collaboration with Musk’s other venture, SpaceX, are designed to give the Roadster a literal boost. Musk has previously claimed these optional thrusters could allow the car to “fly” in some capacity, or at the very least, hover. While the physics of a flying car remain a hotly debated topic among engineers, the inclusion of SpaceX tech in the teaser suggests Tesla is leaning into the sci fi aesthetic of a halo car.

A Long and Winding Road

To understand the significance of this unveiling, it is important to look back at the timeline. The second generation Roadster was first announced way back in November 2017. At the time, Musk promised a 1.9 second 0 to 60 mph time and a 620 mile range.

However, the years that followed were defined by delays. The pandemic, supply chain issues, and Tesla’s focus on the Model 3 and Model Y pushed the Roadster to the back burner.

The delay even sparked a public spat between Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman last year. Altman noted that “7.5 years has felt like a long time to wait” after paying a $50,000 reservation fee, prompting Musk to clap back that Altman had received a refund.

A New Design?

According to recent reports from The Information, the wait was not just about production capacity. It was about design. Sources indicated that the original 2017 prototype had been completely abandoned in favor of a new, yet to be revealed design.

This means the car we see on October 1 might look drastically different from the concept we have been staring at for the last seven years. Tesla has reportedly been working on a fresh design that is “imminent,” aiming to shock the automotive world once again.

Do Not Expect to Drive One Home Soon

While the unveiling is exciting, there is a major caveat for potential buyers. Production is still a ways off.

Musk has previously acknowledged that even after the big reveal, the Roadster will not actually enter production for another 12 to 18 months. If that timeline holds true, we are looking at late 2027 or 2028 before the first units roll off the line.

The Bottom Line

October 1 represents a pivotal moment for Tesla. The Roadster was the car that started it all for the company, proving that electric vehicles could be sexy and fast. Now, the second generation is tasked with proving that Tesla can still innovate at the bleeding edge.

Will it fly? Will it break the 2 second barrier? We will find out on October 1.
