Elon Musk spends half his time talking robots and AI on Tesla earnings calls

Elon Musk Demands Up to $134 Billion from OpenAI in Explosive Legal Battle

The Rhetoric of Revolution: How Elon Musk Transformed Tesla’s Earnings Calls Into a Stage for AI Ambition

Elon Musk wants you to believe Tesla is no longer a car company, even if the financial reality suggests otherwise. The company shipped nearly half a million cars last quarter and generated 70 percent of its revenue from car sales. Yet Musk has spent the last several years constructing a narrative that Tesla is fundamentally an artificial intelligence and robotics company, with the automotive business serving merely as a vessel for these more transformative ambitions. A new analysis of Tesla’s quarterly earnings calls, conducted by TechCrunch in partnership with the financial research firm Hudson Labs, reveals just how decisively Musk’s attention has shifted away from the everyday concerns of automaking toward futuristic projects like the Optimus robot and fully autonomous robotaxis.

The Data Behind the Narrative Shift

The research team sourced transcripts of Tesla’s earnings calls dating back to 2019 and used an AI tool designed for high precision financial research to assign topics to each spoken sentence. The findings paint a striking picture of evolving priorities. Musk now speaks about artificial intelligence, robotaxis, and Full Self Driving software during nearly 50 percent of his total speaking time on these calls. This represents a dramatic increase from 2022, when these topics typically occupied only 15 to 20 percent of his remarks.

The transformation becomes even more apparent when examining how Musk’s focus has moved away from Tesla’s core business. Over the past year, he has spent less than one third of his earnings call time discussing cars and manufacturing. On the third quarter call in 2025, automotive topics accounted for less than 20 percent of his commentary. This decline in attention to the company’s primary revenue source coincided with a period when Tesla’s automotive business stopped growing, facing increased competition from both legacy automakers and new Chinese entrants.

The Rise of Robotics in Musk’s Vision

Perhaps the most dramatic shift has occurred in Musk’s discussion of robotics. Tesla revealed its humanoid robot project, known as Optimus, in 2021. During the following year, Musk spent only 2 percent or less of his earnings call time discussing the initiative. However, over the past year, Optimus has occupied at least 10 percent of his remarks, with the project commanding nearly one third of his focus during the third quarter call in 2025.

This escalating attention to robotics reflects Musk’s broader argument that Tesla’s value cannot be assessed through traditional automotive metrics. His persistent message has been that autonomy and robotics justify the company’s soaring valuation. On the first quarter call in 2024, Musk explicitly stated that anyone who does not believe Tesla will solve autonomy should not be an investor in the company. This framing positions the automotive business as almost incidental to Tesla’s true purpose.

The Disconnect Between Leadership and Management

The analysis reveals a fascinating divergence between Musk’s priorities and those of his executive team. Other Tesla leaders who appear on earnings calls, including chief financial officer Vaibhav Taneja and vice president of engineering Lars Moravy, have been considerably slower to shift their focus. Even on recent calls, they have spent approximately 30 percent of their time discussing the automotive business, with their next most common topics being AI, robotaxis, and Full Self Driving.

This gap likely reflects the practical reality that AI and robotics initiatives have not yet generated meaningful returns for the company. While Musk can speak freely about transformative futures, other executives must contend with the operational demands of a business that still derives most of its revenue from manufacturing and selling cars. These leaders previously devoted nearly 50 percent or more of their earnings call time to automotive topics, but that changed in 2024 as competitive pressures intensified.

When these executives do join Musk in discussing futuristic projects, they match his rhetorical ambition. Taneja captured this spirit on the second quarter call this year when he described the path to abundance as challenging and requiring bold bets while acknowledging that progress will be nonlinear. This language reflects the aspirational tone that has become characteristic of Tesla’s communications, even when discussing projects that remain years away from commercial viability.

The Strategy Behind the Story

Musk’s persistent focus on AI and robotics serves multiple strategic purposes. It justifies the company’s premium valuation by positioning Tesla not as a cyclical automaker subject to industry downturns but as a technology pioneer with limitless potential. It attracts talent and investment to ambitious projects that might otherwise seem speculative. And it distinguishes Tesla from traditional competitors who cannot easily replicate Musk’s narrative authority or his willingness to subordinate present profitability to future vision.

The data also reveals how Musk has used earnings calls, which are typically forums for financial accountability, as platforms for shaping investor expectations. By repeatedly emphasizing autonomy and robotics, he conditions the market to evaluate Tesla through metrics that favor his long term ambitions rather than immediate automotive performance. This approach has proven remarkably effective, even as Tesla’s core business faces unprecedented challenges.

The Risk of Rhetorical Overreach

However, this strategy carries significant risks. The gap between Musk’s futuristic vision and Tesla’s present reality creates potential for disappointment if AI and robotics projects fail to materialize as promised. The company has a history of ambitious timelines that have not been met, and the transition to autonomy has proven more challenging than initially anticipated. Investors who have bought into the narrative may grow impatient if the financial returns from these initiatives remain elusive.

Furthermore, the emphasis on AI and robotics may obscure genuine operational challenges facing the automotive business. Competition from Chinese manufacturers has intensified, and traditional automakers have made meaningful progress in electric vehicle production. While Musk focuses on robotaxis and humanoid robots, competitors are capturing market share in the core business that still provides most of Tesla’s revenue.

The Future of Tesla’s Identity

The earnings call analysis raises fundamental questions about Tesla’s corporate identity. Is the company genuinely transforming into an AI and robotics enterprise, or is Musk using this narrative to sustain investor enthusiasm during a difficult period for the automotive industry? The answer likely lies somewhere between these extremes. Tesla has made legitimate progress in autonomous driving technology and has demonstrated impressive capabilities in robotics. Yet the timeline for these technologies to become primary revenue drivers remains uncertain.

The divergence between Musk’s speaking priorities and those of his executive team suggests that the AI and robotics narrative is driven more by Musk’s personal vision than by operational necessity. While other leaders must attend to the practical demands of manufacturing and sales, Musk can afford to focus on the distant horizon. This dynamic has been a defining feature of Tesla’s culture, for better or worse.

Conclusion

Elon Musk’s transformation of Tesla’s earnings calls into platforms for discussing AI and robotics represents more than a shift in topics. It reflects a fundamental argument about the company’s nature and value. By spending nearly half his time on these futuristic subjects, Musk signals that Tesla’s future lies not in the cars it sells today but in the autonomous systems and robots it promises to deliver tomorrow. Whether this narrative will prove prescient or premature remains to be seen, but it has already reshaped how investors, competitors, and the public perceive one of the world’s most valuable companies. The rhetorical revolution on Tesla’s earnings calls may ultimately prove as significant as any technological breakthrough the company achieves.
