Nvidia’s Computex 2026 Keynote Kicks Off as US Moves to Block AI Chip Loophole for China

Nvidia’s Computex 2026 Keynote Kicks Off as US Moves to Block AI Chip Loophole for China

Today marks one of the most consequential days in the global AI chip race. On June 1, 2026, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang delivered his highly anticipated GTC Taipei keynote at the Taipei Music Center  the opening salvo of Computex 2026  while simultaneously, the U.S. Department of Commerce moved to close a critical export control loophole that had allowed Nvidia’s most advanced Blackwell processors to reach subsidiaries of Chinese companies located outside China.

Jensen Huang Takes the Stage at Computex 2026

With the theme “AI Together,” Computex 2026 (running June 2–5 in Taipei’s Nangang Exhibition Center) is shaping up to be the most AI-centric tech trade show in history. Nvidia’s GTC Taipei event, which kicked off a day early on June 1, saw Jensen Huang outline the company’s next-generation AI infrastructure strategy. Analysts and investors had been eagerly awaiting announcements around Nvidia’s next chip architecture following the Blackwell series, with rumors swirling about the upcoming Rubin architecture and the first Windows PCs powered by Nvidia chips, expected to debut next week.

Joining Huang on stage was Marvell CEO Matt Murphy, signaling deeper collaboration between the two chip giants on AI infrastructure. The event drew the CEOs of virtually every major semiconductor company, underscoring Taiwan’s expanding and irreplaceable role in global AI infrastructure.

US Closes the Nvidia Blackwell Chip Loophole

In a move that sent shockwaves through the tech and financial world, the U.S. Department of Commerce on Sunday (May 31) announced steps to halt Nvidia AI chip shipments to subsidiaries of Chinese companies operating outside China. The action targets a potential loophole that had allowed Chinese firms to acquire the world’s most advanced AI processors  including Nvidia’s Blackwell GPUs by routing purchases through overseas subsidiaries in countries not subject to direct export restrictions.

The timing is striking: the announcement came just hours before Jensen Huang’s keynote in Taipei, creating a complex geopolitical backdrop for what is otherwise a celebration of AI innovation. The move is part of a broader U.S. strategy to prevent China from gaining access to cutting-edge AI compute capabilities that could accelerate military and surveillance applications.

Market and Industry Implications

The dual news a blockbuster keynote and a tightened export regime  encapsulates the central tension of the AI era: the race to build the most powerful AI systems is inseparable from the geopolitical contest over who controls the underlying hardware. Nvidia’s stock has been under pressure from export control uncertainty, yet the company’s dominance in AI accelerators remains unchallenged.

For the broader tech industry, Computex 2026 is expected to deliver major announcements from Intel, AMD, Qualcomm, Acer, and MSI, all competing for a slice of the AI PC and data center market. The first Windows PC powered by Nvidia chips  a landmark shift in the PC ecosystem  is expected to be unveiled in the coming days.
